about

Marco Polo describes the city of Adelma, where all the
citizens have the faces of people the traveler knew
but are now dead. He describes the various characters
that take on the appearance of his lost love ones:
his grandmother, his father. In horror, he realizes that
this must mean he, too, is dead. Khan hears the tale
and fears that “this means the end is not happy.”
